virtually the only consumer product not regulated for health and
has given regulatory authority to federal agencies to assure that
almost all consumer products in America are safe. For example, the
Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) regulates the safety of
nearly 15,000 consumer products used in or around the home. But
no federal agency has the power to ensure that guns manufactured
and sold are safe.

America's pro-gun lobby. When the CPSC was created in 1972, the
gun lobby pressured Congress to specifically exempt guns and ammunition
from its jurisdiction. Other efforts to regulate the sale of ammunition
in 1981 were also defeated.

motor vehicles injuries a national priority. As a result, the death
rate from motor vehicle crashes was cut nearly in half. An estimated
quarter of a million deaths have been prevented. We can and must
do the same thing with guns.
